Remotely Updating the iOS Version

With the release of iOS 9, you can remotely update the iOS version running on certain devices. This article will show you how to do it.

Requirements

  • On iOS 10.3 and later, supported Software Update commands require supervision but not DEP enrollment. If there is a passcode on the device, a user must enter it to start a software update. Prior to iOS 10.3, the supervised devices need to be DEP-enrolled and have no passcode.

How to Update the iOS Remotely

If you meet these 3 requirements above then you can update the iOS through Moki. How it works is Moki needs to get the ProductKey for that particular device and then send that to the device with the command to download and then install the app. Apple gives you three options for the update, Default, Download Only and Install Only. The default method will download an install in one shot, but if you would like to separate out the actions, such as for scheduling them at a later time or have a user perform them at the device level, you can choose Download Only and/or Install Only. The Install Only option will only install the update if the iOS has been downloaded first. We recommend that you use the Default option. We will explain how to do this.

    1. Go to the Devices tab and select your device
    2. Click the Actions drop-down and select Query Available iOS Updates

    1. Get the ProductKey
      • When the Query Available iOS Updates completes click the Inventory tab
      • There is a new section at the very bottom called OS Updates, click the iOS 9.X to expand the menu
      • Click on the ProductKey information and it is copied automatically to your keyboard

    1. Click the Actions drop-down and select Schedule iOS Update

    1. Choose Default – Download & Install option in the Select Install Action section

  1. Paste in the ProductKey
  2. After the device had downloaded the iOS, it will install it
